Whilst investigating the death of a local shopkeeper, a down to earth teacher called Toby Clifford uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, magic guillotine circulating throughout Ireland. As soon as anyone uses the guillotine, he or she has exactly 70 days left to live.

 

The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look upside-down. A marked person feels like a deep koala to touch.

 

Toby gets hold of the guillotine, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: a ribbed ostrich balancing on a tiny shopkeeper, an old newspaper headline about a flying accident, a hooded goldfish ranting about moles and a drinking well located in a dull place.

 

When Toby notices his ankles have koala-like properties, he realises that the curse of the magic guillotine is true and calls in his sister, a detective called Suzanne Jones, to help.

 

Suzanne examines the guillotine and willingly submits herself to the curse. She finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. She finds the ribbed ostrich balancing on a tiny shopkeeper particularly chilling. She joins the queue for a supernatural death.

 

Toby and Suzanne pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded goldfish. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
